This morning I was scrolling through Instagram and saw an image of an Advent calendar and gasped with the realization that tomorrow is Dec. 1! We traveled over the weekend and haven’t gotten around to Christmas decorations yet, but luckily the easy Advent calendar I made last year was the one thing still sitting in the office closet (and not in a box up in the garage).
I didn’t think my girls needed any more toys or candy this time of year so this calendar is for activities, and it couldn’t have been easier to make. I had a lot of flat gift bags I purchased a few years ago when I was making and selling jewelry as a hobby. I wrote the numbers on them with a Sharpie, then used double-sided tape to affix them to poster board. (The bags fit perfectly across, but I had to add a little bit of length.) Then, I hung it on the wall using painter’s tape.
I made a list of holiday/seasonal activities we would be doing over the next few weeks – visit Santa, go to the Nutcracker, decorate the tree, etc. I didn’t get all the way to 24, but some new things will come up throughout the month and some things can be done twice.
Next, I cut white cardstock to fit into each slot, and wrote the activities out on the cards.
I will wait until each night to put in the card with the activity we will do the next day, so that we can be flexible as things come up or our schedule changes (and we don’t get anyone sneaking a peek). I can’t wait for the girls to see it when they wake up tomorrow!
