Apparently, in our neighbor state to the north, soda has become a contentious business. Now, I don’t know how competitive it is here in the East Valley, but I have noticed quite a few soda shops popping up. I hadn’t had the chance to visit one, though, until I received an invitation to the soft opening of Soda Rush in Mesa.
I should confess: I am a daily coffee drinker and not a huge soda person. I do, however, have fond memories of drinking chocolate Cokes at ’50s style diners when out with my family as a teenager and thinking they were sooooo good. Beyond that, sodas with mix-ins were a new concept to me.
With a line behind me and two excited kids, I ordered rather hastily. The Black Hawk for myself (Blackberry, Vanilla, Pepsi) and a Devil’s Dream to take home to my husband who loves Dr. Pepper (Raspberry, Coconut Cream, Dr. Pepper). I tried his and loved it – I could really taste the coconut. In my haste, however, I didn’t realize the shop serves both Coke and Pepsi, and had sort of forgotten that I prefer Coke on the rare occasions I do drink a cola. So I went back a week later to pick up a Coco-Cho-Co (Coconut Cream, Chocolate, Coke) for comparison, and it was great.
But back to the soft opening. My girls sampled the cotton candy and the dairy-free ice cream, which they both loved. We took home one of each of the homemade cookies, and they were soft and delicious. I think my favorite is the Brookie (a brownie-cookie hybrid). I was able to go back for a blogger event a few weeks later and brought home a Ruby Red Velvet (cookie of the month for February) and loved it.
I obviously don’t know how Soda Rush compares to other similar concepts, but I did think it was great and we will definitely go back. (My 4-year-old is already asking for cotton candy for her birthday in July.)
Four things to love about Soda Rush (besides soda):
- The drive-thru. The shop is fairly close to our neighborhood and my daughter’s school, but the drive-thru makes it even more convenient to stop.
- The hours. Open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, I can grab a last-minute treat for classmates or coworkers (or even for myself).
- Dairy-free ice cream. My youngest and I don’t handle dairy very well. For me, it’s easy to take a Lactaid and eat what I want, but she often misses out. She was so excited to have an ice cream cone!
- The cookies. Have I mentioned they are delicious and made on site?
I received complimentary and discounted items at Soda Rush events. The choice to write about it was my own. All opinions belong to me.
