My husband and I lived in Reno for about five years, and one of my absolute favorite events was The Great Reno Balloon Race. I am so excited to know there’s a similar event in the Valley and can’t wait to take my girls to the Out West Balloon Fest, being held March 4-6 at University of Phoenix Stadium.
Mr. G, being a sports writer who covered late football games on Friday nights, never made it out to the show. I attended nearly every year we lived there – either to cover it for the local newspaper or to meet friends. I loved arriving early and watching the Glow Show.
It was so magical to watch the balloons light up in the dark and come to life.
Finally, once it was light enough outside, the Mass Ascension would begin following the National Anthem.
One year, I even got to ride in a balloon as a member of the media.
The best was taking Pumpkin when she was about 13 months old. Watching her watch the balloons made the extra early wake-up with a toddler worth it. Since we’ve been back in Arizona, I’ve been bummed every September that we are missing this and am looking forward to picking the tradition back up here in Arizona with both my girls.
The Out West Balloon Fest will have an early morning Dawn Patrol and Mass Ascension, plus live entertainment, food and a kids zone. The evenings will offer a Glow Show with tethered balloon rides, and on Saturday there is a Fun Run. Find the full schedule with hours, pricing and additional details at www.outwestballoonfest.com.
