Week in Review: Aug. 22-28
I came down with a cold on Monday, and Mr. G worked late a couple nights last week so I was solo parenting while not feeling great. I’m still a little under the weather, so the work week is kind of a blur! On the plus side, I had a chiropractor visit (including a half-hour massage) which was nice – although it did not have the desired effect of helping my cold go away. The best part of the week for me was celebrating Mr. G!
Today is Mr. G’s birthday! He wanted to celebrate the 15th anniversary of his 21st birthday by going out in Scottsdale with friends, so we did that on Friday night. We enjoyed dinner at The Mission and then visited a couple of bars. Somehow us old folks managed to stay out past midnight! Saturday afternoon he had his first of three Fantasy Football drafts, so starting two weeks from now we won’t be hanging out much on Sundays for a while. On Saturday night, we went out to dinner and ice cream with my in-laws, and then Sunday morning the four of us had donuts and eggs for the traditional birthday breakfast.
Pumpkin and Peanut
Pumpkin had a bit of a rough start to the week behavior-wise, but after mom and dad reset a bit and met with her teacher, the end of the week went much better. I’m sure she is still adjusting to kindergarten and her new routine a bit!
Peanut was invited to her first birthday party for a friend from school (vs. a kid of one of our friends) and she had such a great time! It was held at a gymnastics studio, so the kids got to burn of lots of energy, and it was a surprise egg theme, which I thought was very clever (but also am relieved my girls have never seen surprise egg videos!)
We stopped at the grocery store on the way home from the birthday party tonight and both girls, who are often shy around new grown-ups, must have still had a bit of a sugar rush and befriended everyone in the store, telling them about the free apples they were eating from the cart Fry’s provides for kids; about their clothes (“I have Sparky on my shirt. Because Daddy likes Sparky. Daddy’s at work. I also have a Dodgers shirt, because Mommy likes Dodgers.” “I have pockets.”); about their shopping bags (“I have polar bears!” “I have penguins!”); and about items on the shelf (“Look! I had those popsicles for my birthday!”)
Favorite Meals this Week
Make Your Own Pasta Salad: This recipe is easy, and everyone builds their own. You can mix it up with the ingredients. In addition to the pasta, we usually put out chicken, hard boiled eggs, tomatoes, avocado, cucumbers, carrots and peppers and, for sauce, ranch dressing, alfredo sauce and/or pesto. The girls love that they get to pick what goes in their bowl.
Cherry Cheese Bars: I have probably been making this recipe since I was in sixth grade and my mom got a book of recipes that all use butter-flavor Crisco. It’s easy to make and my husband requests it every year for his birthday dessert.
We’re looking forward to another busy week with work, the first PTA school meeting of the year (I’m in charge of Box Tops – whoop whoop!) and are excited for the long weekend. Follow along on Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and Twitter!
