WEEK IN REVIEW: Sept. 5-11, 2016
It was nice to have a four-day work week and have some extra time with the girls this week! Wednesday I had the most stereotypical mom day of all. It was raining in the morning so I couldn’t resist hitting up the Starbucks drive-through and had pumpkin added to my dirty chai. (Not quite a PSL, but close! I only spring for a handful of these a year.) After work, I got my hair cut and colored, and then took a nice leisurely stroll through Target all by myself. (Yes, I have already been called basic at least once this week.)
Friday, I helped serve the Grandparents’ Breakfast at Pumpkin’s school. Her grandparents who live close by were out of town, so she jumped in and put on some gloves and started filling plates and serving without even being asked. She is such a great helper!
The Gabel Girls
Pumpkin had a much better week at school with no behavior issues reported to us. Hooray! One night, her homework was to name something that started with the letter “f” and draw a picture of it. She chose “flag,” and then colored it “red, white and blue for America.” I didn’t have the heart to tell her it looks more like the flag from the Netherlands.
Speaking of flags, the girls and I went to see the Healing Field at Tempe Beach Park this morning. I have always wanted to see it, and the girls get so excited about flags. I don’t think they’re ready for a Sept. 11 history lesson, but they loved seeing the flags, the water and the fire truck, and I was very moved by the display.
Backing up a bit, the three of us went to see the Movies on Main in downtown Mesa on Friday. Peanut doesn’t quite have the attention span to sit through the whole movie – especially with all the distraction of being outside – so we headed home about halfway through (which, to be fair, was after both girls’ normal bedtime) but we still had a great time! We picked up sandwiches and banana budding on our way from Worth Takeaway to take with us to the movie. If you are into veggie sandwiches, theirs is my favorite ever.
Saturday, we got a free car seat check (important and worth the time). That same day, Peanut set a new record for herself and got into markers and colored on herself three different times. We have no idea where the marker came the third time, or where it went! She also has been declaring the most random of things “fancy” and spent the at-home portion of our weekend wearing costume dresses as skirts and calling them tutus.
Pumpkin, getting ready in front of the bathroom mirror and singing, “Who’s that sexy thing I see over there? That’s me, standin’ in the mirror.” Maybe we’ve been listening to a little too much Meghan Trainor …
Favorite Meals this Week
My latest Bumkins blog published this week, featuring the easy and healthy school lunches Pumpkin and I pack on the regular. And unlike last week, I actually cooked dinner this week! These were all hits with me and Mr. G:
- Ground Turkey Sweet Potato Skillet
- Crockpot Chicken Cheesesteak Sandwiches
- One-Pouch Feast I actually make this fairly regularly and serve it with pilaf. I add olive oil before roasting and cook it for closer to 40 minutes to make sure the potatoes get soft. I mix it up with different onions, peppers, squash and potatoes. We’ve tried it with a variety of chicken and turkey sausage but prefer turkey kielbasa.
- Despite the fact that it was 106 today, and that I’m not a huge football fan, football season always makes me want chili and cornbread, so that’s what we had tonight, using a family recipe that uses ground turkey – and also cocoa!
I’m super excited to be going to Blended Conference! This conference last year was my first ever blogger event and I can’t wait to see blogger friends, meet new bloggers, and learn!
