For my birthday, Mr. G got me tickets to see The Avett Brothers in Las Vegas. The concert was last week, and we had such a great time. For various reasons, we could only go for one day, but we have been to Vegas many times before, so we took the opportunity to check out some new stuff.
Hotel: The Linq
We took our first trip to Las Vegas together 10 years ago, and stayed at the Imperial Palace, which was … inexpensive. When Mr. G told me we were staying at The Linq and I realized it was the former IP, I was skeptical. But they did a nice job on renovations. The room, we assume, was previously two rooms. There was a bedroom, with its own bathroom, and a living room with a kitchen area and another bathroom. The decor was gram-worthy, and the view was of the High Roller. Plus, the location on the strip was convenient for us to walk to the show after dinner.
Show: The Avett Brothers at The Brooklyn Bowl
I first discovered The Avett Brothers in 2010 and it was love at first listen. Mr. G and I saw them perform in my hometown that year at the High Sierra Music Festival. The Brooklyn Bowl is a decidedly different venue, but it was really cool – exposed brick walls, old carnival posters and games incorporated into the decor, plus a bowling alley (you can even bowl during the show if you want). The show was intimate, with a packed floor in front of the stage and balcony above, where we stood. The music, even songs I didn’t know, are the kind you feel as much as hear. Even the music leading up to the beginning of the show seemed carefully selected. It was an incredible performance, and I’m so glad we went.
Breakfast: Skinny Fats
We went off the Strip for breakfast to Skinny Fats. One half of the menu is healthy (skinny) and one is happy (fats). To be honest, everything on both sides looked good! There was also a “secret” menu that scrolled on a screen sitting on the counter where you order. Mr. G ordered the Pineapple Jacks off the healthy side – 2 multigrain protein pancakes with grilled pineapple, turkey bacon and sugar-free pineapple syrup. I indulged in the Sweet Brown on the happy side – 3 fluffy sweet potato pancakes, marshmallows and house brown sugar sauce with bacon. We both cleaned our plates! I hope I can go back and sample more of the menu.
Sights: Seven Magic Mountains
Our last stop of the trip was Seven Magic Mountains. This art installation south of town is literally stacks of painted rocks, each around 35 feet tall, but it is cool to see these bright and neon pops of color out in the middle of the desert. The installation, intended to represent the intersection of the natural and artificial, will be there until May 2018.
It was the perfect trip, and a much-needed getaway for Mr. G and I. It’s rare we get one-on-one time, and even more rare to make a mid-week escape, but it’s so important, too!
