Some of my best memories of both my mom and my grandma are of us in the kitchen. My mom, sister and I would spend a full day baking during the holidays, making plates of goodies for friends and neighbors. During summers with my grandma, my sister and I would ask her to make our favorite recipes that we only had the chance to eat a couple times a year, and beg her to let us help.

It’s really special for me to be able to make memories in the kitchen now with my girls, teaching them recipes of my mom’s and my grandma’s, and trying out new ones. I signed up for the Baby Boy Bakery We Cook Kits subscription back in January, and we are having a lot of fun trying them out together!
Each box comes with the printed recipe, some of the tools needed to create them, activity sheets, tips and tricks and little surprises – like Valentines in the February box, and treat bags with number stickers in the April number cookies box.
I find the girls always like their food better when they participate in making it, and can help choose the ingredients.
Our first kit was homemade granola bars. The first time we made them, I followed the recipe exactly. The next time, we swapped out some of the ingredients – golden raisins instead of dried cranberries, half cashews and half almonds instead of all almonds – and we loved them that way, too!
Pumpkin is getting pretty good at reading, but it’s helpful that the recipes include step-by-step instructions with photos. I also appreciate the tips that remind me to be mindful when cooking with the girls – explaining why we grease a pan or how and why we sift the flour.
It offers a good lesson not only in baking, but also math, taking turns, and patience while we wait for things to bake and cool. (Peanut is still working on the patience part – she often snacks on ingredients when I’m not looking!)
It’s also a good reminder to me to let the girls try doing things for themselves. Sometimes I get so busy, I do things myself to save time, or because I’m worried they will get hurt. It’s better for all of us when I can slow down and let them try doing things on their own (with my close supervision).
The best part, of course, is the tasting afterward! And the activity sheets make it even more fun.
